What your child will do at school
We provide a safe, stimulating and enriching environment for the children who come through our doors. The children are given independence in a carefully prepared environment which allows them to master skills that will help them in their daily lives.
Our aim is to allow the children to explore their environment freely both indoor and outdoor. The Montessori materials play a very big part in the environment but most importantly the Montessori ethos of care and respect for young children is maintained throughout the morning.
Throughout the school year we cover the Montessori Curriculum at each child's own pace. As part of our holistic approach to the Montessori ethos we introduce the children to lots of different things like yoga, positive affirmations, hand massage, Irish language, helping others through charity fundraising, and cultural celebrations. We arrange visits from local Fire Men, Garda, Dentist, Farm animals as well as a visit to Bundoran Life Boat Rescue. We also encourage book reading and sharing at home with books borrowed from Bundoran library.
Montessori Education is not just about what happens in the classroom it is about teaching the children to carry their new found skills into their daily life, to be respectful and caring towards other people and the environment they live in.

MONTESSORI CURRICULUM
Practical Life
The Practical life exercises help the child to grow in self-knowledge, self-esteem and independence.
They give the child an awareness of their environment and culture.
They help define fine motor and concentration skills.
When working with the practical life materials the child feels a sense of
helpfulness, responsibility and a sense of order.
Sensorial
The Sensorial materials help the child develop all of their senses; sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing.
The materials provide opportunities for the child to compare, distinguish and discriminate, sense impressions.
The materials are self correcting and are preparing the child for further language and mathematical development.
Mathematics
The Mathematical Montessori materials give the child experiences of moving from concrete to abstract thinking.
The hands-on materials are used to teach simple to complex concepts to the child. Starting from number rods and sandpaper numbers progressing at their own pace through a variety of materials.
Language Development
The Montessori Sensorial materials indirectly prepare the child for holding a pencil, then they can enjoy using the Insets for design in the language area. These geometric insets incorporate all the shapes needed to form the letters of the alphabet. Sounds of letters are taught phonetically using sandpaper letters when the child is ready. Then they learn to listen and build words by putting two or three sounds together using the large moveable alphabet. Our Montessori environment is rich in language which offers experiences and confidence building to every child.
Cultural
The Cultural area covers History, Geography, Biology, and Practical Science.
The teaching and materials help the child realise that there is order in the universe, a natural balance between all things that must be maintained. Real facts are presented to the children eliminating confusion and encouraging further investigation in areas of interest. An awareness of other cultures and respect for different customs and traditions is taught through continent boxes. The children are taught about the world around them and to realise that they are participants in the ongoing life of the universe and they have a contribution to make.
